TORONTO — Research In Motion Ltd. has revealed the latest addition to its line of BlackBerry products, the Pearl, which adds consumer-oriented features such as a camera and a "pearl-like" trackball to move the cursor.
"I would say it’s a big evolutionary step for RIM," National Bank Financial analyst Deepak Chopra said after Thursday’s formal announcement.
"RIM has been building towards this and now they have a lot of the infrastructure in place to pursue the larger, broader consumer market."
The Pearl represents a push beyond RIM’s user base among businesspeople and professionals, as well as an extension beyond its previous products’ no-nonsense strength as wireless e-mail devices and phones.
