 Workers’ Internet use can be a problem

MOST SMALL businesses have relatively few employees, but almost all have computers and Internet access. So the question remains, do you need to have an Internet access policy, or IAP?

If you haven’t considered implementing such a policy, perhaps you should read some of the latest statistics regarding Internet use. Statistics Canada’s most recent study has shown about half of all Canadians report using the Internet for personal use at work.

Internet use for personal reasons in the workplace is not all that surprising, given that 67 per cent of adults in Nova Scotia reported going online for personal use, with Halifax residents showing even more online activity. Seventy-five per cent of Halifax residents reported personal Internet use.

How much time was spent web surfing for personal reasons at work? While the Canadian study did not address this issue, an American study did. The study showed that the average employee spent two to three hours daily online for personal reasons at work. Given a five-day workweek, up to 15 hours, or nearly half of all work hours, was being spent online...

Do people really get fired for websurfing, other than pornography? so many people waste 1/2 the day on the 'net, but if they get their work done and meet their commitments, no boss is going to turf them because they paid their bills online, or read a news site or two.
