Research in Motion, the makers of wireless hand-held computer cellphones called BlackBerrys, broke ground Thursday for its new technical support centre, to be built in Bedford.
Construction on the new building, designed by Halifax architect Andy Lynch, has already begun and is expected to be completed by the spring of 2008. The facility will accommodate up to 1,200 employees the company plans to hire over the five years.
"This is a great project for Nova Scotia," said Mr. Lynch of the firm Lydon Lynch.
The Waterloo, Ont., company plans to hire a person a day for the next five years to work in the facility in Bedford and is now recruiting workers.
"We chose Nova Scotia as a strategic area to grow our business because of its strong information technology background and the quality of the educational system," said Peter Broughall, the firm’s vice-president of customer support.
