Chances are pretty good that John Robert will have difficulty reading this story on the Vanguard's website. The Robert's Island resident has tried in vain for several years to get improved Internet service in his area but, like many residents of rural Nova Scotia, does not have access to high speed broadband Internet. What he does have is access to a dial-up connection, of which Robert doesn't have a very high opinion. "Not only are we relegated to dial-up, but the quality of the dial-up is appalling," he said.
For some time Robert—and people in his situation—has been asking for help; help from the provincial government and help from service providers Aliant and Eastlink. He questions the companies' decision to charge people in his area the same price as they do for those in town when they are receiving what amounts to a lesser service.
He is equally disappointed with the response from the government. Like most people, he uses the Internet every day and believes the matter isn't getting the attention it deserves. "I think the responses I've gotten have been form letters, probably written by a secretary." ...

Just because someone lives in a rural area, does not give them a right to high speed access. There is no way my taxes should be paying to subsidize someone who lives in areas that are not financially viable for high speed.
The comm companies are not going to put a $100K drop in for two people, and for the price of access, the base price of telephone/dial is what it is no matter where you are.
Stop whining and either explore satelitte or move. |

Sure they do. do you deserve power? I vote no. the rollout of that was subsidized. in today's environment, internet access is almost as much of a necessity.
Look at all the companies listed just on this site from rural areas - of course they need access, and if there was more, we'd have more entrepreneurs with part time home based businesses or whatever contributing to the economy.
And satellite is horrible. |

| I live 10 minutes from Lunenburg, 10 minutes from Bridgewater both of which have wireline high speed. Hardly rural! The government just spent $10M to chip seal our road because of the high volume of traffic on it. However, when I speak to Aliant, Eastlink, our MLA, our MP and Industry Canada, there's no possibility of getting any kind of high speed any time soon. |
