Kentville town council hasn’t committed to becoming a partner in the Valley Community Fibre Network (VCFN) but it received a sales pitch of sorts at the December session. Representatives of the VCFN made a presentation to council about the proposed fibre optic cable network on Wednesday, December 13.
Kings Community Economic Development Agency (Kings CED) executive director Erin Beaudin said the Kentville Community Development Committee recommended that they update council on the progress of the network. She said there had been a few issues over the last few months, but the project is now back on track.
VCFN treasurer and finance director for the Municipality of West Hants Ron Mullins said the VCFN is a $4 million, community owned and operated 196 kilometre stretch of 72-strand fibre optic cable that will follow Highway 1 from Halifax to Middleton, connecting multiple partners along the route. He said the founding partners have recognized the need for specialized networks to open up opportunities for economic development, link communities, provide enhanced educational and research opportunities and provide access to enhanced capacity in rural areas...
