TechPortJobs.ca is an initiative of the Information Technology Industry Alliance of Nova Scotia (ITANS). Its goal is to support the growth and development of Nova Scotia’s IT industry through matching IT talent with Nova Scotia-based job opportunities while providing helpful information on living and working in Nova Scotia.

| So that's it? Hasn't this site been in development for nearly a year (I seem to recall hearing something about it last March or so) It seems rather sparse and simple. Why would anyone use this over say Career Beacon other than the fact it is free? It also seems to have some alignment issues with IE7, not fully tested I would guess. For a site that is developed by a group that represents the local IT industry I was expecting a bit more I guess... |

It was done by ISL for 50k... ITANS chairman is also involved in ISL (Partner or CEO) ...
For 50k one would expect a better site. |

| Yes I believe Malcolm Fraser the chairman of ITANS is also the president of ISL who built the site. 50K seems like far too much considering what the site appears to do, even half that would be be too much IMHO for a basic .NET site. Good work I guess if you can get it but I think this all reflects on how the IT industry "works" in this province, lotta who you know, not what you know. |

Who you know will help get you work and get you overpaid. I agree that regardless of whether it's supposed to attract tech people to come here, or if it's supposed to represent the technical abilities of those already here, it's gotta be snazzier than that. I'm not saying flash intros or interstitials or something, but something better than a novascotia-tech-jobsdotca kind of feel.
And what the heck is a TechPort? |

I am surprised that a forward thinking government agency would work the use of 'port' into the site name. It just reinforces the stereotypes that Nova Scotia is really just the port of Halifax and all the province outside of it is a collection of fishing towns. Atlantic Canadians get short shrift all the time. If you've been to central Canada, you know we're seen as backwards fishermen, lobster-loving slackers looking for handouts. Why perpetuate that myth, as if technical businesses are an afterthought?
The site itself is basic but functional. I wonder if they were pressured to get something out due to the various competing job sites in this field. Perhaps this is simply their first revision. |

With the rumored 50k budget and the fact the site has been in development since last March or earlier I believe, I cannot think that they were rushed.
The site is basic and functional as you say but as a portal for the industry it certainly doesn't "wow" anyone in the IT field I don't think.
Perhaps as you say it is just the first version but I suspect this might be all of it. Just have a look at the poor quality of the ITANS site and you will see that not a lot of thought goes into making things look good or be functional (pixelated graphics, misaligned skin graphics, large images resized to fit via width/height settings, etc). The entire site gives an amateurish feel for the local industry IMHO. |

| It doesn't look to be getting much use thus far, only 1 new posting since it looks to have been launched. Anyone know if the site was ever officially announced, I don't recall any PR for it in the local media. |

I don't know if it was announced other than the link showing up on the ITANs site - on the front page; don't see anything in their "newsroom" links. Careerbeacon and Workopolis have already locked up exclusive contracts with most of the big players, so it'll have to rely on small and mid-sized companies who want to post somewhere other than their own sites - but why would they bother with this instead of going to those more well known sites? |
