Halifax, December 28, 2006 – Two data centres operated by Capital District
Health Authority (CDHA) and Health Information Technology Services - Nova
Scotia (HITS-NS) are now linked by redundant fibre-optic telecommunications
service provided by Halifax firm Internetworking Atlantic Incorporated
(IAI).
The link is constructed as a 100% redundant telecommunications facility,
connecting HITS-NS facilities in the Provincial Data Centre on Young Street,
to the CDHA data facilities in the Abbie J. Lane Building. Constructed as a
“redundant ring”, this critical fibre-optic network is virtually immune to
failure. Coupled with unlimited bandwidth, the new facility will provide a
high-performance, low-cost solution to CDHA and HITS-NS’s increasing
data-communications needs.
IAI’s fibre-optic network also serves other organizations in the health-care
sector including the IWK, and the QEII Foundation.
“These fibre-optic links provide CDHA and HITS-NS with a cost effective
means of connecting two data centres to support critical health care
application in Nova Scotia,” said Leigh Whalen, director technical
operations for HITS-NS. “The links are key pieces of the disaster recovery
plans of both organizations.”
IAI has been supplying fibre-optic communications services to CDHA / HITS-NS
since 2004. This most recent link provides for CDHA and HITS-NS’s critical
data transport requirements.
“We are very pleased with CDHA and HITS-NS’s confidence in our services for
these critical links,” said IAI president Bruce MacDougall earlier today.
“IAI’s direct optical services offer an innovative solution to high-speed,
high-reliability datacom requirements.”
IAI specializes in provision of direct fibre-optic telecommunications
services, and owns a 60 km optical network in the metro Halifax-Dartmouth
area. IAI operates over 220 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure in New
Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI, serving numerous enterprise, institutional
and government customers.
