 Another call centre for Halifax

Another call centre is coming to Halifax - this one setting up shop in Bayers Road Shopping Centre, with an anticipated start date of June. Admiral Group plc, a car-insurance company based in Cardiff, Wales, plans to hire 200 people by year's end. It will recruit its first 50 employees in April.

The company provides car insurance to drivers in the United Kingdom and has about 1.2 million customers. It will be hiring mostly call-takers, plus IT and facilities-support staff.

Admiral Group chose Halifax primarily because of the time zone. The company wants employees taking calls during what would be evening hours in the U.K., which would be afternoon here. Admiral people-service manager Jackie Miles, who's in Halifax this week to begin the recruitment process, says it's hard to find anyone to work evenings.

The company ran a small test operation in New Brunswick, but found that province's cities too small for a permanent call centre, based on the level of growth expected. British policyholders raved about the Canadians' friendliness and found the accents "lovely," Miles said...
