Nova Scotia is taking a bold step in building a more sustainable workforce in information and communications technology. A dedicated information and communications job site, techportjobs.com, links recent graduates, local professionals and expatriates with employment opportunities in Nova Scotia. Premier Rodney MacDonald officially launched the site today, March 2, at Cape Breton University with Mike McConnell, CEO of the Information Technology Industry Alliance of Nova Scotia and Stephen Lund, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc. The site, developed by the information technology alliance, in partnership with NSBI and the provincial government, is a user-friendly, confidential tool free to any Nova Scotia employer with information and communications technology job openings. "Techportjobs.com will help Nova Scotia stay ahead of market demand for talent in a sector that is key to building the new Nova Scotia," said Premier MacDonald. "The success of our province's burgeoning IT sector means more opportunities for those who want to stay home, move home, or call Nova Scotia home for the first time." In addition to basic search and resume posting, the site features information about living in, and relocating to, Nova Scotia, as well as information and communications sector statistics and information on training and development programs. "We are aware of only one other jurisdiction in Canada, the tech hotbed of Waterloo, Ont., that is taking this type of focused approach to build on their technology workforce," said Mr. McConnell. A marketing campaign will begin this month, targeting information and communications expatriates working in Canada and the U.S., as well as graduates. The information technology alliance will also continue to promote the site and conduct demonstrations to encourage more employers to post job opportunities. "Our discussions with local industry leaders identified access to talent as a priority," said Mr. Lund. "Our participation in the development of this tool is one way of supporting the industry, which helps us promote and further grow the sector." What is this site going to provide that the current job sites such as Career Beacon, Workopolis, and others are not already? This seems to be a duplication of effort that was already begin served by private industry and is little more than competition to those players now.
Would it not make more sense to use these funds to help grow companies here already or for other uses rather than creation yet another job message board?

Yeah, but it's got PORT in the name. Get it? PORT? And Nova Scotia has a lot of coastline? You get it yet?

Clearly we want to play to our strengths, and nothing says both "Nova Scotia" AND "Hi-Tech" like the syllables "TECH" & "PORT" - put them together? GENIUS! Reminds everyone of all those 'fisherman turns IT guy' success stories starr dobson is always telling us about on Live@5!

At least almost 25 private companies are posting there - like "Eastlink", who (as of this post time) couldn't be bothered to capitalize "Nova" in their list of locations ("nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick") - it's ok, ITANS forgot to capitalize the "Scotia" in one of their stats ("Nova scotia's university and community college system graduates more than 15,000 students a year."), so it balances out.

And the Nova Scotia Government signed up - oh wait, they're not a private company. Neither is the NSCC. And NSCAD or Dalhousie. or ITANS - that's a non profit. At least they got CGI, who according to the newsgroups let their director of development go and are clearing their bench or something.
