ANTIGONISH, NS - StFX is about to unveil a campus-wide wireless Internet service, which will make it one of the only universities in Atlantic Canada to provide this accessibility from every building.
The technology upgrade has been in the works since 2005, but kicked into high gear last spring following a $250,000 donation from Aliant. In November, technicians began extensive site surveys to determine the best placement for wireless access points, and facilities management staff are now hard at work wiring a total of 300 locations across the university. John DeLorey, director of the university's technology infrastructure, says going wireless is just one more way for StFX to stay competitive and make learning more accessible to students. "This is going to allow us to maximize the benefits of wireless devices," he says. "Full roaming capabilities within any building means you can take your device from room to room without losing your connection.
"As far as we know, we are one of the only universities in the Atlantic region with a full coverage network, so while the technology is not new, complete coverage is fairly unusual at this point."
Paul Kent, COO, xwave and Senior Vice President of Enterprise Solutions, Aliant, says the 'anytime-anywhere' capabilities of wireless communication are proving to be tremendous enablers in many sectors.
"We're pleased to help StFX take this transformational step - one that will significantly enhance communication among students, staff, faculty and visitors." The entire system is expected to be in place by the start of the 2007-2008 school year. Once all the buildings are "on" DeLorey predicts StFX will see an increased use of wireless devices beyond the laptop.
"Personal digital assistants, printers, game consoles - there are many more interesting examples and a lot of opportunities on the way."
