 SportsDirect lays off 28 employees

SportsDirect Inc. of Halifax announced a layoff of 28 people Monday, reducing its Bayers Lake operation to 122 staffers.

Changing market conditions prompted the move, said Rob Begg, vice-president of marketing for the 12-year-old Internet operation.

"We had to change our business model to adapt to changing conditions and to ensure future viability and continued growth," he said in an interview.

"It was a difficult decision to make, especially since this is a relatively small operation where everybody knows each other.

"However, it was also a decision we had to make in order to keep the business strong and growing as it responds to a changing marketplace."

Mr. Begg said SportsDirect was responding to changes among some larger customers in the way they do business, which have resulted in less labour-intensive operations on the company’s side...

Funny how they don't mention anything about the strict new regulations in the US affecting their profits. 'oh no, we're so much more than gambling-related stuffs, we have internet advertising, and um... sports statistics'. Yeah, 'cause internet advertising is a big money maker. Welcome to 1998.

Have some compassion. Getting let go isn't a good experience. Hopefully they'll find something quickly or start their own Nova Scotia success story.

Sure it sucks. But it's funny how the one time the NS Gov't invests in a truly local IT company, they pick one associated with an unstable market niche like gambling. I don't think they do any research on these companies at all. Maybe they look at a website or something.
