 Queens Region wants TDC broadband investment

Seventy-five customers of TDC Broadband Inc. lost their high speed internet service in May when the company declared bankruptcy. During a recent Region of Queens Committee of the Whole meeting, a new receiver was named. Mayor John Leefe said the Region of Queens has filed an interest with the receiver, Haley and Associates Inc., so if there are assets to be sold, the Region may be able to recoup some of the investment they made in TDC Broadband Inc. With some support from the province of Nova Scotia, Mayor Leefe said the region really underscored the importance of providing broadband service to rural areas.

In order for a provider to develop a viable service, he explained a fairly large area is necessary. Mayor Leefe said he is satisfied with covering unserved areas in Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, and Yarmouth counties. The province has deemed this area Zone 5 and issued a request for proposals June 21 inviting qualified service providers to bring broadband internet service to all unserved areas of Nova Scotia. A government press release states the, “rollout of broadband service across zones one through six will begin at the same time starting this fall.” Economic Development and Tourism Director, Marg Cartwright has taken on the role of inspector with the project and is working closely with Darryl Haley of Haley and Associates Inc...
