Halifax, N.S. – Halifax Stanfield International Airport (HSIA) is the first major airport in Canada to provide free wireless internet services in its terminal building.

“We are very pleased to offer this service to our millions of passengers and visitors,” says Joyce Carter, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) President & CEO. “Technology has been at the heart of our development strategy as we identify and expand the services our travellers would like. We are always looking for ways to add to what we can offer”.

HSIA is already an internationally recognized leader in customer service, having received first place awards in the global Airport Service Quality program for the past four years.

Wireless internet service is commonly known as “Wi-Fi”. The name comes from Wireless Fidelity, a service that provides wireless high-speed access to the internet. Areas throughout the terminal building have been designated as Wi-Fi zones, including the main lobby, the U.S. preclearance facility, and most of the departures level. Some locations also feature computer work spaces for passenger convenience. HIAA also provides wired internet connections in the U.S. departures lounge.

Wi-Fi patrons require a Username, which is easy to obtain upon registration to the network, and must agree to the terms of use. Once login is complete, users can enjoy up to four hours of free wireless internet service a day and are able to check their email and connect to their office using their virtual private network (VPN). HIAA has built in safeguards in the process to protect against inappropriate or offensive use of the service.

Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport is Atlantic Canada’s gateway to the world. It is the region’s principal full-service airport providing passengers and cargo clients with access to markets across the country, the United States and Europe, and the only airport in Atlantic Canada to offer U.S. preclearance, and Canada Customs services on a 24 hour, seven day a week basis. The Airport welcomes almost 3.4 million passengers annually, and is an internationally recognized leader in customer service, having received first place awards in the global Airport Service Quality program for the past four years.

Good. Not a lot more frustrating than getting to an airport and finding that the only wifi will cost you a good chunk of coinage *cough*ottawa*cough*dulles*cough*, etc
