HB Studios, the Lunenburg entertainment company with international credits for slick electronic sports games, has slam-dunked itself into a satellite location in south-end Halifax.
"This is absolutely not a move away. . . . This is our headquarters and we all love it here," operations manager Melanie Williams said Tuesday from Lunenburg.
The company is keeping the lid on details of the projects that are planned for 1190 Barrington St., which faces the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel, except to hint it will involve two significant titles for popular platforms.
An aggressive recruitment drive is already underway to find game development professionals, including software engineers, assistant producers, graphic artists and animators, to begin work starting in January at the estimated 8,500-square-foot location.
About 20 people are expected to begin work on the game projects at the beginning of the year, and there are ambitious plans and enough room at the location for as many as 60 or 70 more employees, said the studio operations manager.
HB Studios started cranking out mainstream titles for most of the major gaming platforms out of its Lunenburg site about seven years ago.
"We are at capacity in our Lunenburg HQ, so the creation of this new studio provides us with the necessary space to take on further development opportunities and also gives us access to another recruitment option in the broader region," company president Jeremy Wellard said in a news release...
