The news is simply electrifying and it offers greater opportunities for business in Kings County and elsewhere in Nova Scotia. The government’s recent announcement of a $74.4 million infrastructure program to cover the province with long-awaited high-speed Internet access is welcome news to Environment and Labour Minister Mark Parent.
Premier Rodney MacDonald announced the project Dec. 5. All Nova Scotians will have access to high-speed by 2009, a 2006 election commitment. The provincial government will put $19.5 million toward the project, the federal government $14.5 million, and Eastlink and Seaside Communications, the providers, $40.4 million. Eastlink will serve Kings County.
Parent told The Advertiser recently that the move is an important one and not just for convenience, but for business.
“We’ll become the most wired province in Canada,” he noted. “It’s the equivalent of the electrification of Nova Scotia almost, because you really need broadband wherever you live. You can’t do home-based business without high-speed Internet,” the Minister said. It will be an economic advantage for people to come and work in Kings County.
