Once found whipping up meals in some of Halifax’s finer restaurants, chef Paul Routhier is now using his culinary skills at a less likely spot — a software company.

Mr. Routhier was hired by Halifax’s Noviden Technologies Inc. about 18 months ago to create healthy, tasty meals that can be quickly prepared at home by subscribers to Meal-Easy.com.

"People should be thinking about what they are eating and not just opening a can of this or unwrapping a package of that," said Mr. Routhier, who has worked at Fid and Five Fishermen in Halifax.

"They get into ruts. They fall into eating the same thing over and over."

Noviden, a privately owned company, launched its website this week after almost three years of research and development by father-and-son team George and Brent Borovan of Halifax.

George Borovan, Noviden’s president, said the idea for the site came from a question regularly posed in almost every North American household: "What do we do for dinner tonight?"

"It’s a headache for people to decide what they are going to put on their plates," he said.

The Borovans believe that the potential market for their website is vast — families, couples and singles who have little time but want to put a healthy meal on the table and avoid fast food...
