AMHERST - If there any changes coming to one of Amherst’s larger employers, it’s news to the area’s MLA. Since Colorado-based Teletech Holdings announced last month its decision to scale back its Halifax operations, there have been fears in this community that the company’s Amherst office may be impacted. Cumberland North MLA Ernie Fage and Amherst Mayor Jerry Hallee recently met with company officials in Amherst and Fage said he’s confident Teletech isn’t going anywhere.
“The Amherst operation is on a different contract than Halifax and that contract is strong,” Fage said. “I don’t believe Amherst will be affected. The commitment here seems to be strong.”
Last month, Teletech announced its 485 Halifax employees could be out of work because the company’s client there is changing its business needs and will no longer require the call centre. In the meantime, Teletech is working to find a new client for its Halifax operation, but if none is found the centre will close around mid-June. There has been some speculation in the Amherst area that some, or all, of the jobs here could be moved to Halifax, where finding employees hasn’t been the issue there that it has been here.
“As for moving jobs from here to Halifax, that’s something I have not heard,” Fage said.
It’s believed there are about 350 employees in Amherst...
