 Microcredit Summit seeks a little bit of help

Loans of just a few dollars can make the difference between abject poverty and entrepreneurship for poor people in developing countries. It’s called microcredit, and Sam Daley-Harris, founder and head of the Washington non-profit Results Educational Fund, is passionate about it. He gave over 400 Halifax businesspeople a taste of the issue at a luncheon on June 16 in the hopes that they’ll sponsor or volunteer for the Global Microcredit Summit.

The summit will be held in Halifax in November; it’ll be the largest international event ever held in Atlantic Canada. Daley-Harris told the crowd over 100 million young children of elementary school age don’t go to school because their parents can’t afford it, and 29,000 children under five years old die of malnutrition or diseases science has already conquered. “When I read statistics like that, to me they’re scandalous and abhorrent,” Daley-Harris said...
