June 27, 2006, Halifax, N.S. - Customers working or traveling across Atlantic Canada now have access to a fast and reliable Aliant Hotspot service. The innovative commercial service - employing wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology - is being launched today by Aliant, the leading information and communications technology provider in the region, in collaboration with SolutionInc Limited (TSX-VEN:STL), a leader in Internet connectivity and hotspot management. Aliant Hotspots offer customers the convenience of accessing the Internet while away from home or work using their Wi-Fi enabled wireless device, such as a laptop.

"We are very pleased with the service and the support that Aliant and SolutionInc have shown us."
"Our solution is ideal for an innovative company like Aliant," SolutionInc President and CEO Mr. Glen Lavigne comments. "We are in the business of connecting people and communities through the delivery of our Internet management software and services. This solution allows Aliant customers to capitalize on the exploding public access and hotspot market."
The service is easy to sign up for and simple to use, with payment options ranging from one hour to 24 hour access through credit card payment.

so this is so they can offer and charge for very brief periods of semi-decent access. They should make it an option for their home internet service - you get so many free hours per month or year at a hotspot, for people who get around. unless it's just for suits.
wonder if this means they'll be getting rid of the various free services they already support - like at the HIAA. |

There certainly seems to be a lot going on with wifi now in key business areas. Will be interesting to see how the free vs pay services work out. It would be nice if they could also offer some limit perhaps ad based free services if nothing else, so that people could have access to email when travelling but perhaps pay for a faster connection with more online time. Making this an option on ones dedicated high-speed account would also be a nice option.
I think the biggest issue with offering totally free access points is possible abuse and also the legal issues of tracking usage if a crime is committed on the service. |
