Research In Motion Ltd., maker of the BlackBerry handheld device, performed better than analysts had predicted in the first quarter this year, as the number of subscribers, revenue and profit all shot straight up from the previous quarter.
Profit, however, slipped from year-earlier levels when RIM was still enmeshed in its long patent battle with NTP Inc. That litigation was settled earlier this year, just before the first quarter began.
"RIM delivered a solid quarter with strong revenue, earnings and subscriber results," said Jim Balsillie, RIM's chairman and co-chief executive officer. "BlackBerry's ongoing competitive dominance is driving strong growth in existing markets and fuelling substantial international expansion."
